Wedding Cake Wonders

Wedding Cake Wonders

Weddings are always fun and beautiful. There are two things everyone waits to see, the bride in her dress and THE CAKE!

Things to Consider

Choosing the elements of your wedding cake may seem straightforward; pick the flavor you like and get a style that matches the wedding decor… easy! But unfortunately, it’s not that simple. There is way more to your decision than you may think. You must keep in mind the flavor, size, shape, icing, presentation and much more!

It may seem overwhelming but don’t let this discourage you! Your wedding cake decision is very important but it is one of the last things to check off your list since you want to determine the rest of the details of your wedding before selecting the cake. That doesn’t mean waiting till the very last minute. You want to give yourself some time to pick the perfect cake while the baker has time to whip it up!

Thank goodness for tasting sessions! Tasting sessions are a great way to explore different flavors, and find the perfect one for you and your wedding. If you are unsure where to start, there are a few ways to find a flavor:

• The chef: Depending on the bakery that you are going with, you can leave the decisions up to them! They will curate a few different flavors and you can explore the options they lay out for you.
• Seasonal: In the summer you may want to go for lighter and more fruity flavors! (Lemon, strawberry vanilla, and so forth). In the winter, opt for more cozy flavors like cinnamon or chocolate.
• Your favorites: If there is a type of cake that you just LOVE, don’t be afraid to request that as an option to try. Be cautious of interesting flavors that you may like but are not a common flavor for others.

Don’t forget that you can mix & match flavors too. So, you can add your favorite AND a season-appropriate flavor.

Along with flavor, you need to choose a complimenting frosting, or maybe you prefer the sleek and clean look of fondant. This is another point when you want to consider the season & the weather. Talk to your baker about the materials that are going hold up best for the time of year. For example, if you’re having an outdoor summer wedding you’re going to want to steer clear of buttercreams, whipped cream and meringue.

Of course size is going to depend on how many guests you are going to need to serve. If you are doing tiers, you will need at least 3 for 50-100 people. 200 people? You’re looking at about 5 tiers.

If you are having a smaller wedding but want the bold look of a layered cake, there is a solution for that! You can opt for fake tiers that look beautiful but are not edible. Make sure to have enough cake for guests, yourselves, and a little leftovers. You can freeze it and then share it on your first anniversary.

Style is going to be one of the last things you will want to finalize so that you can make sure it complements the venue, dress and overall style of the wedding. With options like rustic, naked cakes, tall & grandiose or sleek and simple, you will have plenty of options to choose from!

Don’t forget that if you are going to add color to your cake, that you can provide swatches to the baker so that the colors are matched as closely as possible to the other linens or dresses that will be seen throughout the wedding.

Don’t Stress

You don’t have to make all these decisions alone. Your baker has done this before, they are happy to answer any questions you have and help you decide what is best for your the size of wedding and what you are looking for!
