New Year’s Eve In The Big Apple (Home Edition)

New Year’s Eve In The Big Apple (Home Edition)

You thought Christmas in New York City is BIG, NYE in the big apple is HUGE! New Year’s is one of the most significant events in the city. New York City has become the central aspect of ringing in the New Year with the ball drop tradition. As the clock nears midnight, many from around the world will turn their attention once more to Times Square to cheer in January 1st.

There are many things you can do on December 31st to ring in the New Year from the comfort and safety of your own home with the same excitement as the NYC ball drop. Here are just some of the fun ways to celebrate:

Times Square at Home

When we think of NYE in the big city, of course, the first thing that comes to mind is that marvelous ball drop in Times Square! NYE in New York was being celebrated from as early as 1904, but the ball itself didn’t make its debut until three years later. The first ball was made of iron and wood and contained 100 25-watt, 5 feet light wide light bulbs. The ball has fallen every year since, except for 1942 and 1943. Over the years, the ball has changed in materials making it lighter and more decorated. There have been seven versions of the ball so far.

The ceremony is hosted in the center of the city at Times Square, with special performances, music, dancing, singing, and more. However, with the ever-changing conditions of the pandemic, many are once again looking to keep it close to home this year. Don’t worry! The fun and excitement is televised live for all to see. Just be sure you’re tuning it at local NY time – eastern standard time. Many people take their thoughts to social media after, and it can be fun to compare your favorite parts with those of the masses!

TIP: Usually head to Times Square with your friends? Hop onto a group video call and watch together in real-time!

A Quiet Way Start

Whether it’s just you and your partner or you have a house full of kids there are many different ways you can quietly ring in the new year and still have a ton of fun!

If it’s just a twosome for the new year, setting up an at-home date night is a cute way to start 2022. Dim the lights, add some decor, and have your favorite foods and a bottle of bubbly ready. You can spend time with one another without the distractions of the outside world. The possibilities are endless, but for this, we recommend keeping it simple and seeing where the night takes you. Maybe you’ll want to watch a movie, maybe you’ll end up baking a new dessert!

If you’re celebrating with little ones at home, there are a variety of activities for you to consider:

  • Get cozy in a blanket fort and a great movie
  • Have a board games night or a Wii tournament
  • Make plans for the new year – talk about what your resolutions are
  • Get crafty and make some 2022 decorations

Pick a couple of ideas and let the kids run with them. Children always find a way to make their own fun. However, don’t forget to join in on the excitement as well!

TIP: Facetime grandparents in for a full family affair!

No matter how you choose to spend your NYE, all that matters is that you are surrounded by the ones you love – virtually or in-person – and are happier than ever! Wishing you a Happy New Year and the best year yet! Cheers to 2022.
