How To Make Dessert Sushi

We once planned an event that was completely candy-themed. Yep, you read that right. So much candy! Everything was bathed in a bubblegum-like pink light, giving everything a beautiful glow! We decided we needed to get really creative for our dessert table and that’s where candy sushi came into play.

Spoiler alert: it was a hit!

Dessert sushi is simple to make and can be customized in hundreds of different ways. All you need is rice crispy treats and an assortment of toppings. Check out this base recipe:

Rice Krispies

Combine 2 tablespoons of melted butter and 2 cups of mini marshmallows in a bowl. Microwave the mixture and stir every 30 seconds or so until the marshmallows are completely melted. After, add 3 cups of your favorite puffed rice-based cereal and fold until everything is equally coated. Flatten your ingredients onto a parchment-lined tray or surface. (You can use a spatula for this or your hands! If you spray non-stick cooking spray on your hands you may find the rice crispy treat easier to work with.)

Now is your chance to get creative! If you’re relying on the stickiness of the marshmallows to act as glue, you will need to move quickly. However, melted chocolate or your favorite icing also works as an edible glue!

Look up photos of your favorite sushi and try to get candies within the same color scheme to imitate what you see. Think reds and pinks for fish and green for the seaweed.

Tip: Vanilla icing and green food coloring make for great candy wasabi!

There’s just something about desserts that don’t look like desserts! It adds a unique twist to a classic. There is a dessert table at every event – make yours original and memorable!
